I like how you can either interpret this picture as being between two lovers, best friends, or aquantinces (though I think they'd be more casual friends than the latter). Matt is perfectly well drawn - reminds me of the Matt that pops up in popular doujinshis.
The only critique I can give is more of a matter of opinion, really... I think that Mello's arm looks very stiff, especially from the elbow down. I can't really pinpoint how I came to this conclusion, but to me it looks more still than the rest of the picture... Or rather, the picture makes me believe that Mello is threatening Matt, whether out of sheer emotional anger or to show dominance in the situation. I think it has a lot to do with the hand and how it's gripping the gun so casually. I would think he would be balling his fingers into a fist around the gun.

I have to admit that one of my greatest fails is that I tend to draw men "girly" or delicate. I´ve been trying to get rid of that style, and drawing Mello and Matt has definitely helped me.
I like what you say about Matt looking like a protector; that´s one of the characteristics that I have always attributed to him. I imagine he would act so calm and stoic on a situation such as the above; he somehow calms Mello down and protects him from doing crazy things (like threatening him just to show dominance, as you said).
